Functional Medicine Programme

Functional Medicine Programme

A structured, personalised approach to complex and persistent health concerns

Functional Medicine takes a broader view of health, considering how medical conditions, nutrition, lifestyle, hormonal health, sleep, stress, activity and other factors may interact and influence how you feel.

Led by Dr Kerry Aston, Consultant Rheumatologist and Functional Medicine Certified Doctor, our approach combines conventional medical expertise with a wider assessment of the factors that may be contributing to your health.

Rather than trying to identify one single “root cause”, the aim is to understand the whole picture, identify what matters most and develop a clear, realistic strategy for moving forward.

Could Functional Medicine Be Right For You?

The Functional Medicine Programme is designed for adults with persistent, complex or recurring health concerns who would like a broader and more joined-up understanding of their health.

Many patients have already undergone investigations or treatment but would like more time to explore how different factors may be interacting and where their efforts may be best focused.

Is This Programme Right For Me?

The Functional Medicine Programme may be appropriate if you have persistent or complex health concerns, want to understand the different factors that may be contributing to your health and are prepared to take an active role in making appropriate changes.

It may be suitable if you:

• have persistent or complex health concerns
• want a broader, more joined-up assessment of your health
• have previously undergone investigations but still have unanswered questions
• would like to understand where best to focus your efforts
• are willing to consider appropriate changes to nutrition, physical activity, sleep and recovery

The programme may not be the right service if you are primarily looking for a single test or one “root cause” to explain several symptoms, extensive testing without a clear clinical reason, supplements as the main solution, or a quick fix without addressing relevant lifestyle factors.

If your primary concern is joint pain, swelling or a suspected inflammatory or autoimmune rheumatological condition, a standard Rheumatology Consultation may be more appropriate.

The 12-Week Functional Medicine Programme

Functional Medicine care is provided as a structured 12-week programme rather than a series of individually booked appointments. This gives sufficient time to understand your history, establish priorities, implement your strategy and review your progress.

Comprehensive Medical Assessment

60 Minutes

Before your appointment you will complete a detailed health questionnaire and provide relevant previous results and medical information.

During your consultation, Dr Aston will review your health concerns, medical history, previous investigations and treatments, medications and supplements, nutrition, activity, sleep, recovery and other relevant factors

The initial priorities for your programme will then be agreed.

Review & Strategy Consultation

45 Minutes

Your second consultation allows Dr Aston to review your progress and any investigation results where applicable.

Your personalised strategy can then be developed or refined, potentially covering nutrition, physical activity, sleep and recovery, stress, metabolic health, supplements where appropriate and optimisation of existing medical care.

Progress Review

30 Minutes

Your final consultation assesses how you have responded during the programme.

Together, you will review what has improved, what has not changed, what has been practical to implement and whether anything within your strategy should be adjusted.

At the end of the programme, appropriate next steps will be agreed.

Investigations & Testing

Additional testing is not automatically required as part of the Functional Medicine Programme.

Where an investigation is likely to provide useful information or influence your management, Dr Aston may recommend appropriate laboratory testing, imaging or specialist Functional Medicine testing.

Previous blood tests, imaging, clinic letters and other relevant investigations can also be reviewed as part of your assessment.

Any additional testing will be discussed with you beforehand, including its purpose and cost.
